This KHMER FOOD in SIEM REAP Changed My Mind About Cambodia 🇰🇭
Raffles Grand Hotel D'Angkor launched a new curated Khmer food tour by tuk tuk that blew me away. It shows you that Cambodian food isn't just street food, it can be a luxury experience.
This is what Raffles is all about, not just staying in a great hotel but helping guests get out into the city and experience local culture and food. Here's where we visited.
Miss. Wong Cocktail Bar
Street 26, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia
Mahob Khmer Cuisine
Cambodia, Krong Siem Reap, Traing village
With sister restaurants here: www.mahobkhmer.com/Sister-Properties.html
The Sugar Palm
Opposite Pannasastra University Street 27, Wat Bo Village, Sangkat Svay Rok, Siem Reap City, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia
Our driver was Mr.Borin so make sure to request him. He is also available for regular tuk tuk services his whatsapp is +855 12 62 81 45
And if you're heading to Siem Reap I have to say this is not just a hotel it is an experience. The staff are so warm and welcoming, it's the luxury you want without the pretentiousness. And they really celebrate Khmer history and culture in this historic building.
This was just one of their signature experiences, you can find all of them here: www.raffles.com/siem-reap/experiences/

I said I'd never return to Cambodia, but 15 years later I realize how amazing this country is with a fantastic first day in Phnom Penh. We started with breakfast at the Central Market known as Phsar Thmei, which is a beautiful building originally built by the French in old Chinatown. Today it's in fantastic condition and still a local market. I had Cambodia's version of Chinese congee called Bo...

    My husband & I stumbled upon your channel. Very nice 😊 Lots of hard work put into your videos. Did you both have an onward ticket when you arrived to Cambodia 🇰🇭 ? Do you always have an onward ticket when traveling in SE Asia in particular? Just wondering if some countries have given you a hard time if you didn't have a ticket set as soon as you landed for when to go. 😊

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina День тому

      Thank you so much! So in SEA it depends on the country. Some airlines won’t even allow you on the plane without an onward ticket. Indonesia you almost always need to show an onward ticket . I’ve been asked when I’m entering immigration in Malaysia but they didn’t ask for proof. I don’t think I’ve been asked in Thailand, Cambodia or Laos but I think they know a lot of people are crossing by land. In cases where I need one but I don’t know my plans I buy an onward ticket reservation which I can show but it expires within 24 hours. I have a referral link in my video descriptions for the website I use which helps me out with a referral fee but doesn’t cost you any more money. There have been times where I just used it on the spot like getting a flight from Ecuador to Colombia they insisted I have one when I checked in so I told them I needed to find it and moved to the side and bought one that would expire to show them. I think it’s $14 and handy if you get asked for one. It’s all really up to the immigration agent too. I know others have been asked in the Philippines and Thailand so I’m always ready to buy if I need to.

      Thank you for the kind words. I learned so much in the previous Khmer traditional food video with CT where we ate more unusual traditional food like the grilled frog and baby bees but we also had a great conversation about Khmer food and why it shouldn’t be compared to others. I think it has really great qualities that people don’t realize because they are comparing it to Thai food.

  • @MelGreenery

    Great Q & A, happy birthday! 🎉 I have been really enjoying your Cambodian series as well. I think the big challenge Cambodia has had re the food scene is due to the atrocities there a lot of food knowledge was lost. The remaining people were then in survival mode for a long time. So it’s only really been the past 15-20 years that more local people are learning to cook Khmer dishes and build that knowledge and food scene back up. They haven’t had the generation to pass that knowledge down like neighbouring countries.

    • @ayngelina

      This is a very good point. But it’s an exciting time to see so many young Cambodians supporting local food and also starting to bring back formal dining for Khmer food.

      I share how I feel and that day was so heavy. The worst part is I shot it a couple months ago hoping it would be over and now it’s insane to think it’s more horrific and our countries allow it to happen.

    I'm not sure I understand the reason why they serve instant coffee in Ecuador? A country that grows awesome coffee, I don't know how you can drink it 🤣 I'm a coffee snob I'm bringing my French Press and my manual grinder in Ecuador

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina День тому

      Oddly enough most coffee producing countries served instant. It’s also common in Colombia and throughout South East Asia. In Colombia and Cuba the local coffee is cut with a legume to stretch it and reduce the cost. But don’t worry if you go to a coffee shop or formal restaurant in Ecuador you can get ground coffee. Instant is more common along the coast but in the Andes ground coffee is common and many people grow their own coffee.

My editors name is Widya although everyone calls him Widy. I was very lucky to find him. During the pandemic he lost his job working as a producer in television and I found him online but we both had a good feeling about each other so we moved off the middle man platform and I have been paying him directly for years. He encouraged me to visit Indonesia after Ecuador and I’ve visited him twice, once with Alan. Also my friend in Jakarta,Aloy, is Widy’s best friend. When I first arrived in Jakarta Widy asked him to take me around because he knew the city would be so overwhelming. And now every time we travel through Jakarta we meet up with Aloy to shoot a video.

      You know I actually really love how they've transformed the place with artwork and photographs, which did not look great on video with reflections. But instead of historical photos and artwork from colonizers it was actually all of locals during that period at Angkor Wat. It was like the place was taken back and filled with the Khmer culture it deserved. And every day I did one of the free cultural experiences, which sadly I was the only person in the hotel to choose- but they were all really interesting as the hotel has its own historian. As for the price, I saw a number of group tours while I was there so I think it may be more affordable than you'd think.

      We took a bus, it was eight hours. We arrived at 7pm so we stayed the night and took a small boat over the next day.

      Thank you so much! I never turn anything down unless it’s endangered but this was one of the most adventurous videos.

    Kaya is not soursop😂. It is an egg jam

      I think it’s more accurately known as coconut, although egg is in it. It was an issue with mistranslation. I was confused when I used an online translator and it said Kaya was sweetsop because it didn’t taste like that. As the Indonesian and Malaysian language are similar I asked Alan to confirm and he asked her if it was "srikaya" which is sweetsop in Indonesian. But I think perhaps she did not hear "sri" and said yes, thinking she said yes it was kaya or coconut but we took it as yes it was srikaya. A few people have commented interesting facts here about how it can be even more misleading with the name of a popular Kaya jam.
